Spain and Portugal: one trip, one eSIM

Spain and Portugal share the Iberian Peninsula, so pairing them in a single trip is one of the most natural routes in Europe. A common loop links Madrid or Barcelona with Lisbon and Porto, and the two capitals are genuinely close — you can go Madrid to Lisbon in under an hour by flight, or take the scenic overland route across the border by train or car. Plenty of travellers also work the coast, running from Seville down to the Algarve or up Portugal's Atlantic shore.

Both countries sit inside the Schengen Area, so crossing between them means no border checkpoints — you simply drive, ride or fly straight through. Your phone data isn't as automatic, though. A Spanish SIM won't help you once you're in Lisbon, and switching cards partway through the trip is a nuisance. A single eSIM that covers both countries keeps you online the whole way.

The easiest option: one European eSIM

For a Spain-and-Portugal trip, the simplest setup is a single Europe eSIM plan. One plan covers both Spain and Portugal — plus 40+ other European countries — on a single install. You scan one QR code before you leave home, and your data keeps working as you move from Madrid to Lisbon without swapping SIMs at the border or paying roaming fees. If your route later adds France, Morocco's neighbours or the rest of Europe, you're already set.

If you're only visiting one of the two countries, a single-country plan works well too — you can pick a Spain-only or Portugal-only plan from our eSIM plans. But for any itinerary that spans both, the Europe plan spares you the hassle of two separate SIMs.

How much data do you need?

Data needs vary a lot by traveller. As a rough guide for a 1–2 week trip across Spain and Portugal:

  • Light (around 3–5 GB): maps, messaging, email, the occasional lookup. Fine if you mostly rely on hotel and café WiFi.
  • Moderate (around 8–10 GB): daily browsing, social media, photos to the cloud, some music streaming and navigation. Suits most travellers.
  • Heavy (15 GB or more): frequent video streaming, video calls, hotspot/tethering for a laptop, or sharing with a travel companion.

When in doubt, size up slightly — running maps and translation apps across two countries adds up faster than you'd expect.

Quick tips

  • Install before you fly. Set up and scan your eSIM QR code while you're on home WiFi, so there's nothing to configure at the airport.
  • Activate on arrival. Turn on your eSIM line (and switch on data roaming for it) once you land in Spain or Portugal, and it connects to a local network automatically.
  • Keep your home SIM for calls and texts. Leave your regular SIM in the phone for calls and SMS/OTP codes, and use the eSIM for data.
  • Download offline maps. Save offline maps of Madrid, Lisbon and any other cities in advance so you can navigate even where signal is patchy.
