The short answer

Filipino seafarers usually get the best setup with two lines on one phone:

• Your Globe, Smart or TM SIM stays in the phone for bank OTPs, GCash codes and texts from your manning agency — with its data roaming turned off, so it can't run up roaming charges.
• An eSIM gives you cheap mobile data in every port, for Messenger calls home, maps and banking apps.

An eSIM works in port and near the coast. At sea, you'll be on the ship's crew Wi-Fi.

Why this matters for Filipino crew

The Philippines is the world's biggest source of seafarers, and cruise ships are the single biggest employer: in the first quarter of 2024, about 1 in 4 deployed Filipino seafarers (27.8%) worked on passenger ships — more than on any other vessel type (DMW). Whether you're a ship's cook on a bulk carrier or a waiter on a cruise ship, the problem is the same: you need your Philippine number for security codes, but using it for data abroad is expensive.

Keeping your Philippine number alive

Your Philippine SIM matters even while you're on contract — it receives your bank, GCash and Maya OTP codes. Two things to remember:

1. Your SIM must be registered under the SIM Registration Act (RA 11934). Unregistered SIMs get deactivated — and telcos can reach you abroad by text to register online with a valid ID (PNA). Register before you fly.
2. Receiving SMS abroad depends on your telco's roaming. Check with Globe or Smart that your line can receive texts while roaming (Globe calls this GoRoam) before your contract starts. Then turn off data roaming on that line.

How to set up your phone (dual SIM)

1. Check your phone supports eSIM and isn't network-locked. See our eSIM-compatible phones list.
2. Buy and install your eSIM before you fly, on Wi-Fi — at home or at the crew hotel in Manila. Its validity only starts when it first connects to a network abroad.
3. In your phone's mobile settings:
4. Set your Globe/Smart SIM as the line for calls and SMS, with data roaming OFF.
5. Set your eSIM as the mobile data line, with data roaming ON for the eSIM.
6. At your first port, it can take a few minutes for the eSIM to connect.

Messenger, Viber and WhatsApp all keep working with your usual account and number — they just use the eSIM's data. Video calls use much more data than chat (several hundred MB per hour), so save long video calls home for crew Wi-Fi if your plan is small.

Which plan fits your contract?

The Global 1GB / 365-day plan is a good "always ready" line — install it once and you're online on arrival at every covered port, then add data with a top-up when you need more. Top-ups add data, not days, so for heavy use during a single season, a 30-day regional plan is better value.

Paying with GCash or Maya

You can pay with any Visa or Mastercard that works for international online purchases, including:

• GCash Visa card — it needs one PIN transaction first (at an ATM or a store terminal) before it works for online payments, and online use may take a few hours to activate after that (GCash help). Do this before you leave the Philippines.
• Maya virtual card — works for online purchases from the Maya app.

At sea: switch mobile data off

Once the ship is well offshore, your phone can't reach land networks. Many cruise ships run their own onboard mobile network by satellite, and roaming on it from a home SIM can be very expensive. On sea days, turn mobile data off and use crew Wi-Fi; turn it back on when you're alongside.
