Japan Network Coverage Guide

Which carriers power your eSIM — and how good is the coverage across Japan

Japan's Mobile Networks — What Travelers Need to Know

Japan has four mobile network operators. Three of them — NTT Docomo, KDDI (au), and SoftBank — are major carriers with nationwide coverage. The fourth, Rakuten Mobile, is newer and has limited rural reach. When you buy a travel eSIM for Japan, it connects to one or more of these three major networks.

Which network your eSIM uses matters. Coverage and speed vary by carrier, especially outside major cities.

The Four Networks Compared

NTT Docomo KDDI (au) SoftBank Rakuten Mobile

NTT Docomo — Best Rural Coverage

Docomo is Japan's largest carrier and the safest choice if you're traveling beyond cities. It has the strongest signal in mountainous areas, remote islands, and along rural train routes. Docomo also leads in 5G availability at 38.4% — over six percentage points ahead of second place.

Best for: Trips to rural Japan (Hokkaido, Shikoku, Tohoku, Yakushima), the Kumano Kodo trail, and extensive Shinkansen travel.

KDDI (au) — Best All-Rounder

KDDI performs especially well in cities and suburbs, with strong 4G and growing 5G. It's the second-largest network and the most common carrier for travel eSIMs.

Best for: Itineraries focused on major cities (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka) with some regional travel.

SoftBank — Fastest Urban Speeds

SoftBank has the highest median download speeds (62 Mbps) but the lowest 5G availability among the big three. Strong in dense urban areas, slightly weaker in deep rural zones.

Best for: Staying primarily in Tokyo and Osaka, heavy data users who want peak speeds.

Rakuten Mobile — Not for Tourists

Rakuten is building out its network but still relies on KDDI roaming in many areas. Almost no travel eSIM providers use Rakuten. Not recommended for visitors.

Which Network Does Each eSIM Provider Use in Japan?

This is the question most travelers actually need answered. Here's what each major eSIM provider connects to:

Provider Network(s) in Japan Notes
eSIM-Now NTT Docomo, KDDI/au, SoftBank Connects to all three major carriers
Airalo KDDI/au, SoftBank Two of three major networks
Holafly KDDI/au, SoftBank, NTT Docomo All three, varies by plan
Saily NTT Docomo, KDDI/au Two of three major networks
Nomad KDDI/au Single carrier
Ubigi SoftBank Single carrier

Network assignments based on provider disclosures and independent testing as of April 2026. Carriers may change without notice.

Key takeaway: If you're traveling to rural Japan, choose a provider that includes NTT Docomo — it has the strongest coverage outside cities. eSIM-Now and Holafly both connect to all three networks.

Coverage by Region

Major Cities — All Networks Excellent

City 4G 5G Speed Notes
Tokyo Excellent Widespread 100-500 Mbps Full 5G across 23 wards
Osaka Excellent Widespread 80-300 Mbps Strong in Umeda, Namba, Shin-Osaka
Kyoto Excellent Available 50-200 Mbps Good in city center, temples have coverage
Fukuoka Excellent Available 50-200 Mbps
Sapporo Excellent Available 50-150 Mbps
Hiroshima Excellent Limited 40-150 Mbps 5G mostly downtown
Nagoya Excellent Available 50-200 Mbps

In any major city, all three carriers perform well. Your choice of eSIM provider won't matter much for urban-only trips.

Route / Area Coverage Carrier Matters? Notes
Tokyo → Kyoto (Shinkansen) Strong 4G No Brief drops in tunnels only
Hakone / Mt. Fuji area Good 4G Slightly Docomo strongest in mountainous sections
Okinawa (main island) Very good 4G No All carriers cover well
Okinawa (outer islands) Variable Yes Docomo has best island coverage
Nikko / Kamakura day trips Good 4G No Close enough to Tokyo for strong signal
Nara day trip from Osaka Good 4G No

Rural & Remote Areas

Area Coverage Recommended Carrier Notes
Hokkaido (rural) Good 4G, patchy NTT Docomo Best coverage on mountain roads
Tohoku (countryside) Good 4G NTT Docomo Some valleys have weak signal
Shikoku (interior) Moderate 4G NTT Docomo River valleys can be spotty
Yakushima Moderate 4G NTT Docomo Coastal areas covered, deep forest is weak
Kumano Kodo trail Variable NTT Docomo Trail sections may lose signal
Japanese Alps / Kamikochi Weak to moderate NTT Docomo Valleys covered, peaks not always

If your itinerary includes rural Japan: Make sure your eSIM connects to NTT Docomo. Download offline maps before leaving the city.

Coverage on the Shinkansen (Bullet Train)

Japan's bullet train network has good 4G coverage along all major routes:

  • Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo–Osaka): Strong throughout, minor tunnel interruptions
  • Sanyo Shinkansen (Osaka–Hakata): Good, more tunnels in western sections
  • Tohoku Shinkansen (Tokyo–Shin-Aomori): Good, occasional drops in northern mountains
  • Hokuriku Shinkansen (Tokyo–Kanazawa): Good, some tunnel sections

The connection recovers automatically after tunnels — no action needed on your part.

Does 5G Matter for Travelers?

Probably not. Here's why:

  • 4G speeds in Japan (40-80 Mbps) are already more than enough for maps, translation, social media, and video calls
  • 5G coverage is concentrated in city centers where you already have excellent 4G
  • 5G drains your phone battery faster
  • Most travel eSIM plans connect via 4G by default

5G is a nice bonus in Tokyo and Osaka, but don't choose a provider based on 5G alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does eSIM work in Japan? Yes. Japan has excellent eSIM support. All three major carriers (NTT Docomo, KDDI/au, SoftBank) support eSIM connections. Coverage reaches 99.9% of the population via 4G LTE.

Which network does Airalo use in Japan? Airalo's Japan eSIM (called "Moshi Moshi") connects to KDDI/au and SoftBank networks. It does not connect to NTT Docomo, which has the strongest rural coverage.

Which network does Holafly use in Japan? Holafly connects to KDDI/au, SoftBank, and NTT Docomo — all three major carriers.

Is there mobile coverage on Mt. Fuji? Yes — 4G coverage exists along the main climbing trails during the official season (July–September). Coverage is provided by all three major carriers at the main stations. Signal can be weak between stations and near the summit.

Will my eSIM work on remote islands like Yakushima or Miyako-jima? Coastal areas and towns have 4G coverage on most inhabited islands. Deep forest or mountain interiors may lose signal. NTT Docomo has the best island coverage. Download offline maps before heading to remote islands.

Is Japan's mobile coverage better than other Asian countries? Yes. Japan ranks among the top countries globally for mobile network quality. 4G population coverage exceeds 99%, 5G is rapidly expanding, and median speeds are significantly higher than regional averages in Southeast Asia.

What is the best network for the Shinkansen? All three major carriers provide good coverage along Shinkansen routes. NTT Docomo is marginally better on routes with long tunnel sections (Tohoku, Hokuriku lines). For the popular Tokyo–Kyoto route, any carrier works well.
