Is WhatsApp Calling Allowed in Oman?

கடைசியாக புதுப்பிக்கப்பட்டது: 2026-10-08

Short answer

Mostly yes, in 2026. WhatsApp messaging has always worked in Oman. WhatsApp voice and video calls were restricted on Omani networks for years, but since December 2024 users have reported making WhatsApp calls normally, without a VPN. The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) hasn't announced an official policy change, so it could still vary by network or change again.

• WhatsApp chat, voice notes, photos: work
• WhatsApp voice and video calls: reported working since late 2024, not officially confirmed
• Zoom, Google Meet, Skype: allowed since the TRA eased restrictions in March 2020
• FaceTime: reports vary, test it before you rely on it
• On a travel eSIM: calls usually work, because the data typically leaves Oman before reaching the internet (not guaranteed, details below)

Why Oman used to block calls, and what changed

Oman's telecom regulator, the TRA, long restricted internet voice and video calling to licensed services. Two things have shifted since then:

• March 2020: during the COVID-19 outbreak, the TRA lifted restrictions on several calling apps, including Skype, Google Meet and Zoom, so people could work and study from home.
• December 2024: Times of Oman reported that users could suddenly make WhatsApp audio and video calls without a VPN. The TRA didn't announce a change, and had earlier said it was open to VoIP services that meet licensing rules.

So the practical situation in 2026 is good, but it rests on how the networks behave rather than on a published rule. That's why we still suggest a backup if calling home matters to you.

What works on a travel eSIM in Oman

Our Oman eSIM uses the Omantel network, 5G where available, otherwise 4G. It isn't a local Omani SIM: like most travel eSIMs it roams, and the data session is typically routed through the provider's international gateway. On recent Oman orders, that breakout has been in Europe.

That means WhatsApp and FaceTime calls usually work over the eSIM, even on a day when a local network behaves differently. The honest caveats:

• It's typical behavior, not a feature we sell. We don't unblock anything.
• It can change. Routing and roaming partners can change without notice.
• Keep a VPN as backup if calling is important. Install it on home WiFi before you fly.
• Messaging always works.

What you get with our Oman eSIM

• Network: Omantel, 5G where available, otherwise 4G
• Plans: up to 50 GB, valid up to 30 days, top-ups supported
• Data only: your normal SIM and home number stay in the phone. Calls home go over WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or Telegram on eSIM data. There's no Omani number and no classic calls or SMS on the eSIM.
• No ID, no paperwork: guest checkout with just an email, no passport upload
• Instant delivery: QR code by email within minutes
• Payment: card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or USDC

Where a local SIM wins: if you live in Oman or stay for months, a local line gives you an Omani number and is cheaper over time. For a road trip through the wadis, a week in Muscat or a business visit, the eSIM is simpler. Our best eSIM for Oman guide covers coverage and how much data you'll need.

How to set up before you fly

1. Buy your Oman eSIM. The QR code arrives by email within minutes.
2. Install it at home on WiFi: iPhone → Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM. Android → Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM.
3. If calling home matters, install a reputable VPN app as a backup.
4. When you land in Muscat or Salalah, switch mobile data to the eSIM and turn on data roaming for that line.
5. Make a quick test call on WhatsApp before you leave the airport.

How much data do calls use?

A WhatsApp voice call uses roughly 0.5 MB per minute, video around 5 MB per minute (about 300 MB an hour). Daily video calls add up, so size your plan accordingly.
