Why Airalo Won't Work in India
If the Airalo app won't install from your Indian app store, or the website won't load now that you're on an Indian connection, your phone isn't broken and your account is fine. Since early January 2024, India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) directed Apple and Google to remove Airalo, Holafly and several other foreign eSIM apps from their Indian storefronts, because those providers hadn't obtained the licensing and No Objection Certificate (NOC) required to sell SIM-type services into the Indian market. The same directive told Indian internet service providers to block the providers' websites too — so travelers report that the Airalo and Holafly sites also fail to load on an Indian connection, not just the apps.
Here is the distinction most people miss: the removal stops you from reaching the provider to buy or top up — it does not stop an eSIM you already installed from delivering data. An Airalo plan you loaded before you flew (or before the order took effect) generally keeps working normally. What you can't do from inside India is install the app, reach the site to buy a new plan, check your balance, or top up.
This is a licensing and distribution matter, not a ban on using travel eSIMs. The plans Airalo sells are bought for use abroad — you load one for, say, Thailand or the UAE before you fly. What changed is that, from inside India, you can no longer download their app or reliably reach their purchase site. A licensing and KYC framework for selling international eSIMs into India is still working its way through TRAI and DoT consultation as of 2026, so the situation may evolve.
What's Actually Blocked vs. What Still Works
It helps to separate the two things, because "Airalo not working" can mean two very different problems:
- The data on an already-installed eSIM: still works. The restriction is on the purchase and management app and website, not on the eSIM profile sitting in your phone. If you installed before the order — or before you arrived in India — you're connected.
- Installing the app or reaching the site to buy/top up: blocked. The app is delisted from Indian app stores, and the website is unreliable to reach on an Indian connection. This is the DoT directive, not an outage.
So if you already have a working travel eSIM installed and it's giving you data, nothing is wrong. The problem only bites if you need to install the app, buy a plan, or add more data while you're on an Indian network.
Why This Happened (the Honest Version)
This isn't Airalo doing something wrong, and it's not a reason to feel clever about working around a rule. India introduced licensing and NOC requirements that foreign eSIM providers hadn't met, and the DoT enforced them by delisting those companies' apps and directing ISPs to block their sites. The same regulatory wave can, in principle, reach any foreign provider — including us — so we won't pretend we're permanently immune to it.
The practical takeaway for a traveler is simple and boring: provider apps and sites can be unreachable from inside India, so the reliable move is to set up before you're on an Indian connection at all. Buy and install while you're on home WiFi or your Indian carrier's data, and reachability on the ground stops mattering.
What To Do Right Now
If you're an Indian resident travelling abroad
Buy and install your destination eSIM before you're relying on a foreign eSIM site — while you're on home WiFi or your Jio/Airtel/Vi data, which can reach any provider. Choose the plan for where you're going, not for India: a UAE plan for a Dubai trip, a Thailand plan for Bangkok, and so on. Scan the QR right away and install it before the flight, so there's nothing left to set up at the airport. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone for OTPs and calls. Browse all eSIM plans here.
If you're a foreign visitor coming to India
You don't need a foreign eSIM app at all — you need data that works inside India. A local Indian SIM or carrier eSIM means KYC paperwork (passport and visa, usually processed in person), which is exactly the hassle most short-trip visitors want to skip. A travel eSIM for India sidesteps that: buy it before you arrive and it connects on landing. We cover coverage, realistic data amounts, and current prices in our best eSIM for India guide.
On "how to install Airalo in India"
People search this a lot, so here's the plain answer. You can't install the Airalo app from an Indian app store today because of the DoT delisting, and the Airalo website is unreliable to reach on an Indian connection for the same reason. Switching your Apple ID or Google account to a different country's store region is fiddly, can break other apps, and still leaves you depending on a foreign eSIM site loading in-country. The cleaner route is to sort out your eSIM before you're on an Indian network — buy and install on home WiFi or your Indian SIM's data, so reachability on the ground stops mattering.
Looking for an Airalo Alternative for India
If the recurring lesson — can't install the app, can't reach the site on the ground — has you shopping around, a few things matter more than the brand name:
- Buying and installing before you're on an Indian connection, so the in-country access problem never comes up. This is the one factor specific to India.
- Instant QR delivery by email so there's no app to install and nothing to log into in-country.
- No passport upload or SIM-registration paperwork to complete a purchase.
- A crypto payment option if you'd rather keep the purchase off a card.
We're not the only option here — any travel eSIM you set up before you go solves the same problem. To be straight with you, the same regulatory wave that delisted Airalo and Holafly could in principle reach any foreign provider, including us, which is exactly why buying before you travel is the dependable approach: it doesn't hinge on any provider's site being reachable from inside India. A note for the two directions this cuts: if you live in India and travel out, set up your destination eSIM before you leave — covered in eSIM for travelers from India. If you're coming to India, see best eSIM for India.
Set up before you're on an Indian connection so the app never matters: browse eSIM plans and install on home WiFi or your Indian SIM before you fly.
