Italy and Greece: one trip, one eSIM

Italy and Greece pair beautifully for a Mediterranean holiday, and travellers combine them all the time. A typical trip links Rome, Florence and Venice with Athens and the Greek islands, moving between the two by a short flight from Rome or Milan to Athens or Santorini, or — for a slower, more scenic option — by overnight ferry from ports like Bari, Brindisi or Venice across the Adriatic to Patras or Igoumenitsa. From Athens, island-hoppers fan out to Santorini, Mykonos, Crete and beyond.

Both countries are in the Schengen Area, so there are no border formalities as you move between them — whether you fly or sail, you just continue your journey. What doesn't carry over automatically is your mobile data. An Italian SIM won't work once you reach Athens or the islands, and swapping cards mid-trip is a hassle you don't need on holiday. A single eSIM that covers both countries keeps you connected throughout.

The easiest option: one European eSIM

For an Italy-and-Greece trip, the simplest setup is a single Europe eSIM plan. One plan covers both Italy and Greece — plus 40+ other European countries — on a single install. You scan one QR code before you leave home, and your data keeps working as you move from Rome to Athens and out to the islands without swapping SIMs between countries or paying roaming fees. Add another stop like Croatia or France and you're already covered.

If you're only visiting one of the two countries, a single-country plan works well too — you can pick an Italy-only or Greece-only plan from our eSIM plans. But for any itinerary that spans both, the Europe plan saves you from juggling two separate SIMs.

How much data do you need?

Data needs vary a lot by traveller. As a rough guide for a 1–2 week trip across Italy and Greece:

  • Light (around 3–5 GB): maps, messaging, email, the occasional lookup. Fine if you mostly rely on hotel and café WiFi.
  • Moderate (around 8–10 GB): daily browsing, social media, photos to the cloud, some music streaming and navigation. Suits most travellers.
  • Heavy (15 GB or more): frequent video streaming, video calls, hotspot/tethering for a laptop, or sharing with a travel companion.

When in doubt, size up slightly — running maps and translation apps across two countries, plus ferry-schedule and island lookups, adds up faster than you'd expect.

Quick tips

  • Install before you fly. Set up and scan your eSIM QR code while you're on home WiFi, so there's nothing to configure at the airport.
  • Activate on arrival. Turn on your eSIM line (and switch on data roaming for it) once you land in Italy or Greece, and it connects to a local network automatically.
  • Keep your home SIM for calls and texts. Leave your regular SIM in the phone for calls and SMS/OTP codes, and use the eSIM for data.
  • Download offline maps. Save offline maps of Rome, Athens and the islands in advance so you can navigate even where signal is patchy — handy on ferries and remote beaches.
