Short answer

For 3 to 6 months in Australia, take our Australia 50 GB / 180-day plan on the Optus network. Install it before you fly and you have data the moment you land in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth. It's prepaid, needs only an email address, and you can top up the same eSIM if you need more.

  • 50 GB, valid 180 days on Optus, 5G where available, otherwise 4G
  • Covers the first half of a working holiday while you find work and a place to live
  • Top up on the same eSIM as you go
  • No contract, no auto-renewal

The Australia page shows the 30-day plans. The 180-day plan isn't listed there, so use the direct link above.

Australia long-stay options

Plan Data Valid for Good for
Australia 50 GB 50 GB 180 days Working holiday, a study semester, a 3–6 month road trip
30-day plans 1–50 GB Up to 30 days A shorter visit, or your first month before a local SIM

Optus covers the cities, most towns and the main highways well. Like every Australian network, coverage thins out in the remote outback, so download offline maps before long drives. See also our best eSIM for Australia guide.

Working holiday: how the eSIM fits in

A working holiday visa usually runs for 12 months, and the first weeks are busy: hostel, tax file number, bank account, job search, maybe a car. You need data for all of it from day one.

Months 1–6: the 50 GB / 180-day eSIM keeps you online while you move around and apply for jobs. Your home number stays on your normal SIM, so bank codes from home still reach you.

After that: if you've settled somewhere and want an Australian number for employers and landlords, get a local prepaid SIM. Australian prepaid services need an ID check at activation; a passport works. If you're still moving around, top up the eSIM and keep going.

How much data do I need per month?

How you use your phone Data per month Is 50 GB / 180 days enough?
Light: maps, messaging, email, hostel or home Wi-Fi 3–5 GB Yes, easily
Normal: social media, music, job apps, some video calls 8–12 GB Yes for 4–6 months, possibly with one top-up
Heavy: streaming, hotspot for a laptop, van life with no Wi-Fi 20 GB or more Plan on top-ups, or a local plan

Road trips and van life use more data than city stays: navigation, music and finding campsites all run on mobile data, and there's often no Wi-Fi.

Staying longer: top up the same eSIM

Running low, or staying longer than planned? Sign in with the email you ordered with, open your order page (the link is in your confirmation email) and tap Add more data, then pick a top-up. Each option shows its data and validity before you pay, and it lands on the eSIM already on your phone. No new QR code.

We also email you when your data is running low. Top up while the plan is still active; once an eSIM has expired, buy a new plan.

eSIM or an Australian SIM? The honest comparison

An Australian SIM wins if you need a local number (most employers, agencies and landlords expect one) or you're staying close to a full year. Australian prepaid plans with large data allowances are also usually cheaper per month over many months.

Our eSIM wins if you want data from the moment you land, before you have an address or a job, and you don't want to deal with a phone shop on your first day. There's no contract and nothing to cancel when you move on to New Zealand or Asia.

Many backpackers do both: arrive on the eSIM, add a local SIM once they need a number, and keep the eSIM as backup data.

What you get

The eSIM is a data plan. Your home number stays active on your normal SIM, and everything internet-based works on the eSIM:

  • WhatsApp, Signal, Messenger and FaceTime, including voice and video calls
  • Maps, banking apps, job apps, email, streaming
  • Hotspot for a laptop or tablet

Your phone must be eSIM-compatible and unlocked. Check our list of eSIM-compatible phones.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an eSIM for 6 months in Australia?

Yes. Our Australia 50 GB plan is valid for 180 days on Optus. Buy it here.

Is it good for a working holiday?

Yes, especially for the first months. It works from the moment you land, needs no ID or address, and covers you while you set up your bank account, tax file number and job search. Later, you can top up or add a local SIM if you need an Australian number.

Which network does it use?

Optus, with 5G where available and 4G elsewhere.

Do I get an Australian phone number?

No, it is data-only. Your home number stays on your normal SIM, and WhatsApp, FaceTime and other apps work over the eSIM, including calls. For an Australian number, get a local prepaid SIM.

Will it work in the outback?

In towns and along main highways, usually yes. In remote areas, no network has full coverage, so download offline maps before long drives.

What if I run out of data before the 180 days?

Top up from your order page. The data goes on the same eSIM, and we email you when you're running low.

When does the 180-day period start?

When the eSIM first connects to a network in Australia. You can install it at home before you fly.

Is it a subscription?

No. You pay once, and nothing renews automatically.
