You went to add more data to your eSIM — and the top-up won't go through, or it went through but no data arrived. Mid-trip, that's stressful. The good news: eSIM top-ups fail for a handful of specific, knowable reasons, and most of the time you can be back online in a couple of minutes. Here's how to tell what's happening, and what to do.
Why an eSIM top-up fails
1. The plan already expired
A top-up extends an active plan — it can't revive one that's already ended. Travel plans run for a fixed number of days, so if your eSIM's validity is up, the app may refuse the top-up (or take the payment without restoring service). If the plan expired, you don't need a top-up — you need a fresh eSIM. Not sure if it expired? See why an eSIM stops working after a few days.
2. That eSIM isn't toppable
Not every eSIM or plan supports top-ups. Some plans are strictly one-time, and some regions or plan types can't be extended at all. If the app shows no top-up option — or errors the moment you try — that plan simply may not be rechargeable, and the fix is a new plan rather than a top-up.
3. You can't reach the app to top up
This bites in exactly the places you'd want to top up. In some countries the provider's app and website are blocked at the network level — Turkey is the clearest example, where foreign eSIM apps have been unreachable since 2025 — and mainland China's Great Firewall blocks many Western services. Your already-installed data may still work, but you can't open the app to buy more. WiFi or a VPN may get you through; otherwise, buying from a provider whose site is reachable is the faster route.
4. The top-up payment is failing
Sometimes the eSIM is fine and it's the payment that won't complete — a card declined abroad, your bank blocking a foreign charge, or a currency/region mismatch in the app. If the top-up "isn't working" but your eSIM still has service, this is often the real culprit.
5. The eSIM was deregistered (a top-up can't fix it)
Here's the one most people never hear: if your eSIM is a roaming profile that the local network deregistered (it can happen after ~10–14 days in some countries), it shows permanent "No Service" even with data left — and a top-up on that same eSIM won't bring it back. The line has been dropped; adding data does nothing. You need a new eSIM.
Straight talk: reasons 1, 3, and 5 can affect any provider, us included — our own roaming-based plans expire and can deregister in the same countries. We'd rather tell you than pretend otherwise. What we can do is get you a working plan fast.
Which one is it? (quick check)
- App won't open, or errors before payment? → #2 (not toppable) or #3 (blocked app).
- Payment won't complete? → #4 (payment issue).
- Paid but no new data, and the eSIM shows "No Service"? → #1 (expired) or #5 (deregistered) → you need a fresh eSIM.
The fast fix: a fresh data plan
When a top-up won't cooperate, the quickest way back online is a new data plan rather than fighting the app. An eSIM-Now plan installs in about two minutes:
- Data-only travel eSIMs for 200+ destinations, with instant QR delivery
- Our site and checkout are reachable in places where other providers' apps are blocked (like Turkey)
- In China, traffic routes via Hong Kong — Google, WhatsApp & Instagram work without a VPN
- Straightforward pricing, no app required
→ Get a fresh eSIM and top up your trip
Prefer to top up rather than replace? Our own eSIMs support top-ups where the plan allows it — but if you're stuck abroad right now, a fresh plan is the reliable move.
