France and Italy: one trip, one eSIM

France and Italy are one of the most popular two-country combinations in Europe, and it's easy to see why. A classic itinerary pairs a few days in Paris with a run down to Rome, Florence and Venice, and the two countries sit right next to each other — you can go Paris to Milan or Turin by high-speed train in around seven hours, or hop a short flight between Paris, Nice, Rome and Milan. Many travellers thread the Riviera together too, drifting from Nice and the Côte d'Azur across to the Italian coast without much more than a change of train.

Because both countries are in the Schengen Area, there are no border checkpoints to slow you down — you simply cross from one to the other. The one thing that doesn't travel seamlessly by default is your phone data. A local French SIM won't help you in Rome, and swapping cards mid-trip is a hassle. That's where a single eSIM that spans both countries makes the whole journey simpler.

The easiest option: one European eSIM

For a France-and-Italy trip, the simplest setup is a single Europe eSIM plan. One plan covers both France and Italy — plus 40+ other European countries — on a single install. You scan one QR code before you leave home, and your data keeps working as you move from Paris to Rome without swapping SIMs at the border or paying roaming fees. If your plans change and you add Spain, Switzerland or Greece, you're already covered.

If you're only visiting one of the two countries, a single-country plan works well too — you can pick a France-only or Italy-only plan from our eSIM plans. But for any itinerary that touches both, the Europe plan saves you from juggling two separate SIMs.

How much data do you need?

Data needs vary a lot by traveller. As a rough guide for a 1–2 week trip across France and Italy:

  • Light (around 3–5 GB): maps, messaging, email, the occasional lookup. Fine if you mostly rely on hotel and café WiFi.
  • Moderate (around 8–10 GB): daily browsing, social media, photos to the cloud, some music streaming and navigation. Suits most travellers.
  • Heavy (15 GB or more): frequent video streaming, video calls, hotspot/tethering for a laptop, or sharing with a travel companion.

When in doubt, size up slightly — running maps and translation apps across two countries adds up faster than you'd expect.

Quick tips

  • Install before you fly. Set up and scan your eSIM QR code while you're on home WiFi, so there's nothing to configure at the airport.
  • Activate on arrival. Turn on your eSIM line (and switch on data roaming for it) once you land in France or Italy, and it connects to a local network automatically.
  • Keep your home SIM for calls and texts. Leave your regular SIM in the phone for calls and SMS/OTP codes, and use the eSIM for data.
  • Download offline maps. Save offline maps of Paris, Rome and any other cities in advance so you can navigate even where signal is patchy.
