You installed your eSIM (Airalo, Holafly, or another provider), it worked fine for a few days — and now, mid-trip, it's dead. "No Service," no internet, right when you need it. The cause is almost always one of four things. Here's how to tell which, fix it if you can, and get back online fast if you can't.
The 4 reasons a travel eSIM suddenly stops working
1. Your plan expired (the #1 cause on short plans)
Travel eSIM plans run for a fixed number of days from activation — a 7-day plan stops on day 7, even if you still have data left. If yours died "after a few days," check the plan length you bought first: a 7-day plan quietly ending on the morning of day 7 is the single most common reason.
Check it: open your provider's app → your plan → look for "Valid until" or "Expires." If it's passed, no setting will revive it — you need a fresh plan.
2. You used up your data
Once you hit your data cap, the connection drops until you top up or buy a new plan. Maps, photo backup, and video calls burn through data faster than most people expect on a trip.
Check it: provider app → remaining data. If it's near zero, that's your answer.
3. Roaming deregistration — the one nobody explains
This is the sneaky one. Many travel eSIMs — including a lot of Airalo and other providers' plans — aren't a local SIM; they're a roaming profile riding on a foreign carrier's agreement. In some countries, the local network automatically deregisters ("kicks off") a roaming device after about 10–14 days — even if you still have data and days left. The tell: it worked fine, then suddenly permanent "No Service," with data remaining. We see this a lot in Turkey, for example.
If that's you, no toggle will fix it — the profile has been dropped by the network. You need a fresh eSIM (a top-up on the same one won't revive a deregistered profile).
Straight talk: this is a roaming reality, not one brand's flaw — our own roaming-based plans can hit it in the same countries. Where we run local or Hong-Kong-routed coverage, it's more stable. We'd rather tell you than pretend it can't happen.
4. A device setting slipped
Sometimes a software update or a stray toggle knocks the eSIM offline: Data Roaming turned off, the wrong APN, or your other SIM grabbing the data slot.
Quick fixes: turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM · set the eSIM as your mobile-data choice · check the APN · set Network Selection to Automatic · toggle airplane mode off and on for 15 seconds.
Which one is it? (30-second check)
- Still have data AND days, but "No Service"? → It's #3 or #4. Try the settings fixes; if it's a hard "No Service" that won't come back, it's deregistration → you need a new eSIM.
- Out of days or data? → It's #1 or #2 → you need a fresh plan.
