Germany and Austria: one trip, one eSIM
Germany and Austria are close neighbours that share a language and a long border, so combining them in one trip is a natural fit. A popular route pairs Munich with Salzburg and Vienna, and the two are well connected — you can ride Munich to Vienna or Salzburg by direct train in around four hours or less, or link Berlin and Vienna by fast rail and short flights. Many travellers build an Alpine loop that drifts from Bavaria into the Tyrol, crossing between the countries more than once as they follow the mountains.
Both countries sit inside the Schengen Area, so crossing the border means no checkpoints — you simply continue by train or car straight through. Your mobile data isn't so automatic, though. A German SIM won't help you once you're in Vienna, and swapping cards partway through the trip is an unnecessary hassle. A single eSIM that covers both countries keeps you online the whole way.
The easiest option: one European eSIM
For a Germany-and-Austria trip, the simplest setup is a single Europe eSIM plan. One plan covers both Germany and Austria — plus 40+ other European countries — on a single install. You scan one QR code before you leave home, and your data keeps working as you move from Munich to Vienna without swapping SIMs at the border or paying roaming fees. If you extend into Switzerland, Italy or the Czech Republic, you're already covered.
If you're only visiting one of the two countries, a single-country plan works well too — you can pick a Germany-only or Austria-only plan from our eSIM plans. But for any itinerary that spans both, the Europe plan spares you the hassle of two separate SIMs.
How much data do you need?
Data needs vary a lot by traveller. As a rough guide for a 1–2 week trip across Germany and Austria:
- Light (around 3–5 GB): maps, messaging, email, the occasional lookup. Fine if you mostly rely on hotel and café WiFi.
- Moderate (around 8–10 GB): daily browsing, social media, photos to the cloud, some music streaming and navigation. Suits most travellers.
- Heavy (15 GB or more): frequent video streaming, video calls, hotspot/tethering for a laptop, or sharing with a travel companion.
When in doubt, size up slightly — running maps and translation apps across two countries adds up faster than you'd expect.
Quick tips
- Install before you fly. Set up and scan your eSIM QR code while you're on home WiFi, so there's nothing to configure at the airport.
- Activate on arrival. Turn on your eSIM line (and switch on data roaming for it) once you land in Germany or Austria, and it connects to a local network automatically.
- Keep your home SIM for calls and texts. Leave your regular SIM in the phone for calls and SMS/OTP codes, and use the eSIM for data.
- Download offline maps. Save offline maps of Munich, Vienna and any other cities in advance so you can navigate even where signal is patchy — useful in Alpine areas.
